Sorry for the sad weekend cat post -- I have a planned worked out to help find a home for the little kitty, so hopefully he will come to me soon! He is really skittish, and runs away if you try to pet or reach out to him. Thanks to all of you who emailed and commented about what to do to help him!
Anyway, I wanted to talk about this bookshelf that I painted for a client a couple of weeks ago. It was a family piece that was sitting unused, and it looked like this:
The scrollwork on the edges was really cute, though, and my client and I knew with a little TLC it could look a lot better. I white/graywashed it, and now it is the perfect piece to accompany this baby nursery:
much better, huh?
Here a photo I snapped partially through the first coat:
I could tell after one coat it was going to look a lot better!
Here are some detail shots:
I like how the woodgrain is still really prevalent, but it's much lighter. I did two coats of whitewashing, and then a wax sealer topcoat.

Beautiful results! Those scalloped edges are so lovely - what great bones!

Beautiful work - did you sand it back or was your whitewashing technique some paint and glaze?
ReplyDeleteI want to do this to a table I have! Please tell me how you did this!!! I love it:)
ReplyDeleteangeline - a little bit of sanding and some deglossing before i did any painting. however, it was really roughed up to begin with.
ReplyDeleteTurned out lovely! I adore the scalloped edges.
ReplyDeleteThis might be a little unrelated - but do you ever have clients that are afraid of painting/finishing pieces in their homes? I am going to school for interior design, and I constantly meet people who are scared to death of covering their walls with paint, or painting a piece of furniture (and most of the time they even admit they need a dramatic change and don't like their existing decor)! I feel like giving the stuff you have a needed makeover is a much more cost effective way to update and personalize a space.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you do some really neat projects! i enjoy reading your blog!
arg - yes! sometimes, if i am somewhere and make a suggestion, it happens, otherwise usually when people contact me, they are ready to make the change (or the designer has talked them into it).
ReplyDeleteThe shape of that piece is just stunning, seriously it just took my breath away!
ReplyDeleteLove it. That scrollwork on the edge is beautiful. I love the pearlescent trellis patern on the wall too. xo, c-
ReplyDeleteGreat bookcase! I just linked back to you on my last post....I did a stenciled wall. You inspired me! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful beautiful bookcase!!! It's stunning - great work!
ReplyDeleteThat looks really whimsical and sophisticated at the same time. What a change paint makes! Good job Kristen! I wanted to give your blog a mention in a post. Let me know what you think!
